We are visiting family in NY, and today it felt like -3°F outside. WAYYYYY too cold for us to go outside and enjoy the snow. I decided to bring ‘snow’ to Geneva by creating this easy mixture of baking soda and water. You can use lotion or conditioner instead of water – I just kept it simple with what I could find in the kitchen. Simply mix the two ingredients until you get a mixture that will stick together, and your toddler can play with.
I also gave Geneva some cookie cutters and utensils to explore with. Feel free to make it a complete winter wonderland with little animal figurines, trees, snowflakes, or anything else you think your toddler will enjoy. You can even use mini spray bottles with colored water to have them explore colors. Geneva enjoyed this activity for a while, and when she was done, the cleanup was so quick. Simply rinse off the extra accessories and bowl with water, and wipe down the kitchen table.
Indoor snow sensory play benefits toddlers by boosting brain development, fine/gross motor skills, and creativity through tactile and visual exploration. It offers calming sensory input while teaching new vocabulary. Geneva decided to point to her snowman’s backside and say the new word: butt. I couldn’t help but giggle a little and say, “Yes, that is the snowman’s butt.” Any new vocabulary is exciting at this age. Indoor snow is a fun, versatile activity that promotes exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative play in a winter-themed way, even when it’s too cold outside. I hope you get the chance to try indoor snow, and don’t forget to share your experiences!
